Best First Dance Wedding Songs: Ideas & DJ Tips
Updated: Sep 12

Your first dance is one of the few moments during a wedding reception when the room slows down and the focus is completely on the two of you. The song matters — but it doesn't need to be the most popular wedding song, the newest release or something chosen because a list online says you should use it.
I'm Kev from Rhythm and Beats DJ Services, and after DJing plenty of Melbourne weddings I've found the best first dance songs usually have one thing in common: they feel right for the couple. Below are some strong ideas, followed by the practical things I'd consider before making your final choice.
Best First Dance Wedding Songs
If you want a shortlist to start from, these are some first dance songs that work well across different styles and generations:
Elvis Presley – Can't Help Falling in Love
Etta James – At Last
Ed Sheeran – Perfect
John Legend – All of Me
Van Morrison – Crazy Love
Leon Bridges – Beyond
Elton John – Your Song
Ben E. King – Stand by Me
Coldplay – Yellow
Adele – Make You Feel My Love
Jason Mraz – I Won't Give Up
Christina Perri – A Thousand Years
Taylor Swift – Lover
Stephen Sanchez – Until I Found You
INXS – Never Tear Us Apart
These aren't rules — they're simply a good starting point. If you already have a song that means something to you, that personal connection is usually worth more than choosing a traditional wedding favourite.
Romantic First Dance Songs
If you want the first dance to feel intimate and emotional, slower songs tend to work naturally because they give you time to settle into the moment rather than worrying about choreography.
Etta James – At Last
Elvis Presley – Can't Help Falling in Love
Leon Bridges – Beyond
Van Morrison – Crazy Love
Elton John – Your Song
Adele – Make You Feel My Love
John Legend – All of Me
Ed Sheeran – Perfect
Modern First Dance Songs
Not every couple wants a classic. If your music taste is more current, a modern track can make the moment feel more like you and less like a wedding tradition you're simply ticking off.
Taylor Swift – Lover
Stephen Sanchez – Until I Found You
Ed Sheeran – Tenerife Sea
Harry Styles – Adore You
Dan + Shay – Speechless
Hozier – Like Real People Do
Beyoncé – 1+1
Bruno Mars – Just the Way You Are
Upbeat First Dance Songs
A first dance doesn't have to be slow. If standing in the middle of the room swaying for four minutes sounds uncomfortable, choose something with more energy.
Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams
Stevie Wonder – Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Natalie Cole – This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)
Queen – You're My Best Friend
Bruno Mars – Marry You
Beyoncé – Love on Top
The Cure – Friday I'm in Love
Earth, Wind & Fire – September
An upbeat first dance can also make it much easier to invite the bridal party or all your guests onto the floor halfway through and transition straight into the party.
Australian First Dance Song Ideas
If you want something with a local connection, Australian music gives you some excellent options that don't feel like the same wedding playlist repeated again.
INXS – Never Tear Us Apart
Crowded House – Fall at Your Feet
Vance Joy – I'm With You
Angus & Julia Stone – The Wedding Song
Missy Higgins – The Special Two
Pete Murray – So Beautiful
How to Choose Your First Dance Song
Start with meaning, not popularity. A song tied to a trip, a concert, your early relationship or even an inside joke will usually feel more genuine than selecting a song because it appears on every 'best wedding songs' list.
Listen to the lyrics. Plenty of beautiful songs sound romantic until you actually read the words. Make sure the story of the song fits the moment you're using it for.
Think about how you actually want to dance. If you're planning choreography, tempo becomes important. If you're simply going to sway together, almost any song with the right feeling can work.
Don't feel pressured to be original. There is nothing wrong with choosing a popular first dance song if it's genuinely the one you both love. Equally, there is no requirement to choose a traditional love song at all.
How Long Should a First Dance Be?
You do not have to play the full song.
For many couples, around two to three minutes is plenty — particularly if you're not doing a choreographed routine. A four- or five-minute track can feel much longer when you're the only two people standing in the middle of the dance floor.
This is something I regularly help with. I can create a clean edit that keeps the best parts of the song, shortens a long introduction or gives you a clear point where guests can be invited onto the floor.
Can Your DJ Edit Your First Dance Song?
Yes. A first dance edit can be as simple as shortening the song, or it can involve combining sections, changing where the track finishes or building into a surprise second song.
Because I handle the music planning personally for every Melbourne wedding I DJ, we can work through these details before the day rather than trying to solve them during the reception.
Should You Invite Guests Onto the Dance Floor?
This is one of my favourite ways to make the first dance feel relaxed.
You can have the first verse or two together, then ask your bridal party, parents or everyone else to join you. It removes some of the pressure and gives the DJ a natural opportunity to move directly into the opening dance-floor set.
If you'd rather keep the moment entirely to yourselves, that's just as valid. There is no requirement for the first dance to turn into a group dance.

Planning the Rest of Your Wedding Music
Your first dance is only one part of the soundtrack. Your ceremony, entrances, background music, parent dances, dance-floor opening and last song all contribute to how the reception flows.
