Old school R&B has always been one of my favourite genres to play, so this event felt like a perfect fit from the very beginning.
Knowing the client specifically booked me for that sound gave me a great starting point, but I also wanted the music to evolve naturally throughout the night. Rather than staying in one genre, I blended classic R&B, hip hop throwbacks and Latin party favourites to keep the dancefloor feeling fresh while still delivering the songs everyone had been waiting to hear.
Because the client had already seen me perform live, there was a level of trust that allowed me to simply read the room and build the night organically. That's often when the best parties happen—when I can respond to the crowd in real time rather than working from a rigid playlist.
The Music Journey
The night began with familiar throwback tracks that immediately took guests back to their younger years. As friends and family settled into the celebration, those nostalgic favourites naturally encouraged people onto the dancefloor.
From there, the energy continued to build through old school hip hop, R&B floorfillers and Latin club favourites that kept the momentum growing throughout the evening. Every transition was mixed live, allowing me to adjust the pace as the crowd responded and ensuring the dancefloor stayed full well into the night.
By the end of the celebration, the music had become exactly what every milestone birthday should be—a soundtrack filled with memories, laughter and plenty of moments people would still be talking about long after the party finished.
Crowd Moments
One of my favourite parts of this night was seeing just how quickly guests connected with the music. As soon as the first old school R&B classics dropped, people who had been catching up over a drink suddenly found themselves singing every word and making their way to the dancefloor.
That's one of the reasons I love performing at milestone birthdays. These celebrations are filled with songs that have been part of people's lives for decades, and hearing those tracks again instantly brings back memories while creating brand new ones with family and friends.
Seeing the birthday host enjoying every moment with the people closest to her made this one particularly rewarding.

Why this Mix Worked
This set worked because it wasn't built around one genre—it was built around the people in the room.
Old school R&B provided the heart of the night, while hip hop throwbacks, Latin favourites and commercial party tracks kept the energy moving and ensured there was something for everyone. By mixing live and reading the crowd throughout the evening, I could respond to the atmosphere instead of following a predetermined playlist.
It's an approach that works especially well for milestone birthdays where guests often have different musical tastes but share a love of timeless classics and unforgettable party anthems.
