I always take the venue layout into account when planning my equipment setup so that the music reaches every part of the room without overwhelming conversations during the earlier parts of the evening.

They trusted me to read the room and adapt throughout the night, giving me the flexibility to build the atmosphere naturally as the celebration unfolded.

Having that preparation allows me to focus on keeping the dancefloor full while making the evening feel personal to every couple.

How the Night Unfolded

Once the formalities were complete, I gradually built the energy with familiar crowd favourites before moving into the styles that best suited the guests on the night. Rather than following a fixed playlist, I constantly watched how people were responding and adjusted the music accordingly.

As the evening progressed, the dancefloor naturally evolved into a mix of throwback R&B, sing-alongs, commercial favourites, house music and party classics. Being able to blend genres while maintaining momentum helped keep guests of all ages involved throughout the reception.

From Behind the DJ Decks

One of the things I enjoyed most about this wedding was the freedom to be creative with my mixing. Because Alice and Sam were happy for me to read the room, I could respond to the energy on the dancefloor rather than simply working through a predetermined playlist.

Throughout the night I paid close attention to how guests were reacting, adjusting genres, tempo and transitions to maintain momentum. Small decisions like knowing when to introduce a sing-along favourite or when to switch into higher-energy tracks can make a huge difference to keeping a dancefloor full.

Those moments are what I enjoy most as a wedding DJ, because no two celebrations are ever the same.

Planning Your Own Celebration?

f you're planning a wedding at Sandringham Yacht Club, my biggest recommendation is to think about the flow of the evening rather than just the music itself. Allow enough time for formalities, but don't leave too long between dinner and dancing, as that's often when the energy naturally starts to build.

I also encourage couples to give their DJ some flexibility. Sharing your favourite artists, genres and must-play songs is incredibly helpful, but allowing room for live crowd reading often results in a much stronger dancefloor because the music can evolve with the atmosphere throughout the night.
