The Setting

Montsalvat is one of Melbourne's most iconic wedding venues, and every time I perform there I'm reminded why couples fall in love with it. Surrounded by historic buildings, beautiful gardens and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else, it creates a wedding experience that feels both elegant and completely unique.

Having DJ'd multiple weddings at Montsalvat over the years, I've become very familiar with the venue and how to make the most of its intimate reception spaces. It's also a place that holds personal memories for me—my wife and I chose Montsalvat for our own wedding photos, so every time I return I'm reminded why it's such a special location for couples beginning their next chapter together.

One of my favourite ways to enhance the reception space is with carefully positioned uplighting. Soft, tailored lighting complements Montsalvat's beautiful stone walls and historic architecture, transforming the room as the evening progresses from an elegant dining space into a warm, vibrant dancefloor.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Jana and Lutz wanted a wedding that felt genuine, relaxed and centred around bringing their families and cultures together. Rather than following a rigid playlist, they trusted me to build the atmosphere naturally and create a celebration that reflected both their personalities and the people who had travelled to celebrate with them.

Because I'd worked at Montsalvat on several occasions, I already understood the venue's flow, acoustics and reception layout. That familiarity allowed me to focus entirely on the couple, coordinating the music around the evening's formalities while creating smooth transitions that kept the celebration feeling effortless from beginning to end.

How the Night Unfolded

The evening unfolded exactly the way a great wedding should. Following the formalities, the dancefloor gradually came to life with a carefully balanced mix of cultural favourites, timeless classics and high-energy party tracks that encouraged guests of every generation to join in.

One of the highlights of the night was blending meaningful cultural music with familiar singalong favourites and dancefloor anthems. Those seamless transitions kept the music feeling fresh while allowing everyone—from close family through to lifelong friends—to celebrate together.

Rather than following a fixed playlist, I continually adjusted the music based on the atmosphere in the room, helping the dancefloor grow naturally as the night progressed.

From Behind the DJ Decks

Montsalvat is one of those venues where experience genuinely makes a difference. Every reception space has its own character, and understanding how the room responds to lighting, sound and guest movement allows me to focus less on logistics and more on creating an unforgettable experience for the couple.

One of my favourite parts of this wedding was watching the atmosphere evolve as the evening progressed. The tailored uplighting highlighted the venue's incredible architecture while helping transform the room from an elegant reception into a lively celebration. Combined with the music, it created an atmosphere that felt warm, intimate and full of energy.

Personally, Montsalvat will always hold a special place for me. Knowing my wife and I also chose this venue for our own wedding photos gives every wedding I perform here an extra sense of connection.
