Brunswick Foodstore was the perfect venue for Monica's 30th birthday celebration, creating a relaxed yet energetic atmosphere where family and friends could enjoy a great meal before the night transformed into a packed dancefloor.

With an intimate guest list, the celebration felt incredibly personal from the moment everyone arrived. Smaller parties often create the best atmosphere because every guest knows each other, and that connection was obvious throughout the night as laughter, singing and dancing filled the room from beginning to end.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Monica had a clear vision for her 30th birthday. Rather than simply playing a collection of favourite songs, she wanted the night to recreate the feeling of a Hot Dub Time Machine set—taking guests on a nostalgic musical journey through multiple decades while keeping the dancefloor full the entire time.

During our planning, we talked about the artists, eras and iconic songs that had shaped different stages of her life. While the heart of the night centred around 90s nostalgia, we also built in plenty of memorable moments from the 80s, 2000s and beyond. The goal wasn't simply nostalgia—it was creating a soundtrack that sparked memories, conversations and plenty of unexpected singalongs.

How the Night Unfolded

I gradually lifted the energy before launching into a musical journey that celebrated multiple decades of unforgettable party music. Inspired by the style of Hot Dub Time Machine, the night moved seamlessly between iconic hits, forgotten favourites and huge singalong moments that kept everyone guessing what was coming next.

The 90s formed the heart of the celebration, with old school R&B, hip hop, pop classics and dance anthems creating one memorable moment after another. Throughout the evening I also sprinkled in carefully chosen tracks from other decades, giving guests those wonderful "I haven't heard this in years!" moments that instantly brought people rushing back onto the dancefloor.

Rather than following a rigid playlist, I continued reading the room throughout the evening, adapting the pace and musical direction based on the crowd's response to keep the energy building until the final song.

From Behind the DJ Decks

One of my favourite moments from this celebration was watching people's reactions when an unexpected classic dropped. There is something incredibly satisfying about seeing a guest stop mid-conversation, point towards the DJ booth and rush onto the dancefloor because a song they hadn't heard in years suddenly started playing.

Creating that feeling isn't about randomly jumping between decades—it's about understanding how songs connect emotionally and knowing exactly when to introduce them. Throughout Monica's party I carefully balanced huge party anthems with nostalgic surprises, allowing the night to constantly evolve while still maintaining the energy on the dancefloor.

The spontaneous dance circles, singalongs and friendly dance-offs weren't planned—they happened naturally because the music connected with the memories everyone shared. Those moments are exactly why I love DJing milestone birthdays.
